Lost account access

As a part of its privacy policy, NoBleme will protect your anonymity as much as possible. This means that you will never be sent any emails that could be used to link you to your identity on the website, or asking you to provide your password. On top of that, automated password recovery systems can be used in a few nefarious ways that we would rather not have to deal with. With this context in mind, NoBleme decided to not implement an automated account recovery process.

If you have lost access to your account (forgotten username, forgotten password, or otherwise), the only way to recover that access is to go on NoBleme's NoBleme's IRC chat server and ask for a website administrator to manually reset your account's password. No need to worry about identity usurpation, there is a strict process in place that will allow the administrator to verify your identity before doing the resetting.

Moving NoBleme to a new server

Published Friday, April 8th 2022 (A year ago)

The server on which NoBleme is currently hosted will be replaced soon.

This will cause various outages which will affect the website and IRC.

Why?

First off, NoBleme's current server is 8 years old. It's not an antique yet, but its performance is an order of magnitude worse than what is available nowadays for the same price.

Secondly, too many things unrelated to NoBleme are hosted on NoBleme's current server, which I would like to split away and host separately. However, the way I initially setup things means I can't separate anything without undertaking a long and complex operation. Since I am forced to go through a long and complex operation, I might aswell go all the way and move to a new server.

Thirdly, hosting my own DNS server was a terrible idea and keeps causing me issues. Those who know what it implies will understand my pain right away. I'm never doing this again. Don't ask why I did it. I don't even know.

Lastly, NoBleme's IRC server uses an old version of unrealircd which can't be upgraded easily. This is starting to cause issues. Reinstalling everything on a more modern setup should solve those issues.

How?

Step 1 will be deactivating NoBleme's custom DNS service. This will cause the website to stop working, and will prevent people from connecting to our IRC server (those who are already on the server will still be able to keep using it as long as they don't disconnect).

Step 2 will be moving to the new server, followed by shutting down the current server. This step's consequences are unclear, it will cause both the website and IRC to be unavailable for an undefined amount of time.

Step 3 will be ensuring that everything is back to normal. The website should look exactly as it did before the move. Our IRC server however will be brand new, which means it will require you to once again register any nicknames and any channels which you used to own.

When?

I currently have no timeline in mind, nor can I say how long each step of the process will take.

My current (very flexible) goal is to do this before April is over, and to achieve each step in one day, which would mean a total of three days of work. As it is an extremely heavy operation, no promises.

How to stay updated?

Since IRC will go offline at some point, the only place where I will be sharing updates on my progress throughout the whole operation is NoBleme's Discord server.

Once the move is over and everything is back to normal, I will write another devblog.

See you on the other side.
